The University of California, Berkeley calls on all her interested applicants, for the Emeka Kalu Ezera fund mapped out for African graduate students.

In memory of Emeka Kalu Ezera, a grant has been established, to support students who are graduates in African countries. The sponsorship would take place at the University of California, Berkeley.

Funds realized from the endowment are sent to the scholarly center for African Studies, to enable studies the adequate participation in African studies, after their undergraduate education.

Scholarship Details

The University of California Ezera Research Fellowship for African Students Scholarship was inaugurated in memory of the late Emeka Kalu Ezera.

Ezera used to be a Graduate Student Instructor and a Doctorate student in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He departed from the surface of the earth in a tragic automobile accident, on July 12, 1990, in Nigeria.

Ezera was born on April 30, 1959, and was the first of the four sons of his parents: Professor Kalu and Mrs.Onuma Ezera. He was an indigene of Ohafia in Imo State, Nigeria.

He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1981 and earned a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations from the London School of Economics, a year later (1982). He forged ahead to the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and Public Policy; 1985 and 1987 respectively.

Ezera worked on his Doctorate dissertation in Political Science at Berkeley in 1989- “An Institutional Approach to the Implementation of Structural Adjustment Policies: The Nigerian Case.”

Requirements for eligibility

  • Students from all and only African countries are eligible and encouraged to apply for the scholarship. However, it is important to note that the Ezera Research Fellowship prioritizes Post-graduate students from West Africa.
  • All applicants must promise to make advancements in the scholarship program for African Studies: Social sciences, Humanities, and Public policy.
  • They should portray strong leadership skills.
  • Prospective applicants must have been admitted and enrolled into the University of California at Berkeley through which funds may be dispersed to them.

Scholarship Duration

Primary School Deals

The scholarship spans a maximum of two years. The beneficiaries will be allowed to tender applications for the second term of support once their scholarship term elapses.

Scholarship Rewards

The Ezera funds may be used to supplement the scholarly studies of the applicants. This does not substitute for other grants. Candidates are encouraged to apply to other sources, including the Rocca grant for extra benefits.

Other funds like maintenance, travel, or research costs, are covered to enhance pre-dissertation and dissertation research in Africa.

Recently, the grants from the Ezera fund are within a range of $500 to $1000. For awards of excellence, the Center adheres to the cap on stipends set by the Graduate Division. The combined awards for all fellowships in 2016, was $34,000
