This is to notify the general public that NCC will block any SIM not registered with National Identity Numbers (NIN) from 16th December, 2020. All telecommunication operators in the country MTN, GLO, AIRTEL etc have been mandated to abide by this new directive from the federal government.
How To Retrieve You NIN NUMBER
If you are already enrolled For the National Identify Number, there is no need going for another registration, All you need do is to dial *346# to retrieve your NIN. This can be done in any network you use. Please it is advisable not to disclose the number to any body, as such, make sure you use your phone in doing this.
New NIN Registration Procedure
For any one who is yet to enrol you can start the process online by visiting NIN registration portal: nimc.gov.ng then visit the nearest enrollment centre to complete the registration.
Note that enrolment is totally free.
Documents Required to Enrol For A NIN
- Your BVN if you have one.
Original and valid supporting documents such as:
- Old National ID Card
- Driver’s License
- Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent)
- Nigerian International passport
- Certificate of Origin
- Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in your community
- Birth certificate
- Declaration of age
- Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader
- NHIS ID card
- Government staff ID card
- Registered/recognized private organization staff ID card
- School ID Card (private/public)
- Tax Clearance certificate
- Valid immigration documents
How To Link MTN To NIN
To link your National Identification Number (NIN) with your SIM registration data, please submit your NIN and phone number below.
Note that NINs submitted here will be received as unverified, pending validation against the NIMC database. This means you may be required to re-validate this information in person, in the future. Thank you!
1. Visit www.mtnonline.com/nim/otp A notice stating that “This is solely for the purpose of collating NIN pending when verification of the submitted NIN is completed through NCC/NIMC”
2. Nevertheless, proceed to fill the form, requesting your names, phone number, NIN, and email address.
3. After submission, an OTP will be sent to your phone to complete the process.
To link your your NIN with your MTN SIM using USSD, follow the steps below:
- Dial *785# using the MTN you wish to perform the linking on.
- Type 1 for “Enter your 11-digit NIN” and send.
- Enter your 11-digit NIN and send.
Wait for the network to give a confirmation of your submission. You may get a message saying “Network error.”
How To Link Airtel With NIN
To link your NIN to your Airtel phone number, follow the steps below:
- Dial *121# on the Airtel line you wish to link.
- Type 1 for “NIN Capture” and send
- Enter your 11-digit NIN and send.
Wait for the message confirming your submission. If you get an error, just wait for some time and try again.
Note: Glo and 9Mobile have not commenced sim linking with NIN. As soon as they commence, we will update this post to reflect the steps you must follow to carry out the linking.
Directives Issued By NCC to all Network Operators in Nigeria
- Affirmation of the earlier directive to totally suspend the registration of NEW SIMs by all operators.
- Operators will require ALL the subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.
- The submission of NIN by subscribers must take place within two weeks (from today December 16, 2020, and end by 30 December 2020).
- After the deadline, ALL SIMs without NINs will be blocked from the networks.
- A Ministerial Task Force comprising of the Minister and all the CEOs for the telecoms sector (among others) as members is to monitor compliance by all networks.
- Those who disobey this directive will face a hard punishment, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license.
