Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2021

This is one of the best and available fully-funded scholarships to study in canada. Named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program was established in 2008 by the Government of Canada to boost Canada’s ability to draw in and maintain world-class doctoral students and launch Canada as a universal center of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Graduate Scholarship is available to undertake Graduate level programs to study in canada.

Getting an admission to study in canada is no mean fit. Vanier scholars show leadership skills and a high level of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, health and engineering.

About 166 scholarships are granted annually and a total of about 500 scholarships are active at any time.

PROGRAM VALUE AND DURATION

The scholarship offers $50,000 annually for 3years (nonrenewable).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS), applicant must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Candidates must be nominated by only one Canadian Institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota.
  • Candidates must be undergoing first doctoral degree (including joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has showed a substantial research component). Note that only the PhD part of a joint degree is qualified for funding.
  • In the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, candidate should intend to undergo full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD) research and studies at the nominating institution. Only the PhD portion of a joint graduate research program is qualified for funding.
  • Candidate must have completed at most 20 months of full-time study in their doctoral program since 1st May, 2022.
  • The doctoral program will commences after the conclusion of a Master’s degree program. The doctoral enrolment date is determined from the months of Study completed.
  • Candidate must have completed at most 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program (i.e. joint graduate research program, fast-track, accelerated), by 1st May, 2022 if:
  • Registered in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD. Candidates in this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously registered in a Master’s program:
  • The months of study are counted as of the date on which a candidate is officially enrolled in the joint program (including the Master’s portion of the program).
  • accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (not previously registered in a Master’s program);
  • The months of completion of studies are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
  • Accelerated (Fast-track) from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.
  • The months of completion of studies are calculated from the original Master’s enrolment date.
  • Candidates must have achieved a first-class average, as specified by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are advised to contact the institution for its description of a first-class average.
  • Candidate must not hold, or have withheld, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC OR SSHRC to begin or conclude a doctoral program.

ELIGIBILITY OF PROGRAM OF STUDY

  • An acceptable doctoral program must comprise a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-examined at the institutional level as prerequisite for a conclusion of the program.
  • Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also eligible programs if they have a substantial autonomous research component, as discussed above.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Nomination are assessed and selected on the basis of the following three criteria, considered equally:

  • Academic Excellence
  • The applicant’s academic history and their attested excellence in academic achievement throughout the course of their academic career.
  • Research Potential
  • The applicants interest in discovery, their demonstrated research history and potential contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field, and any anticipated result.
  • Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability) this is an important criterion that has to be assessed in an indirect manner as defined by the following qualities:
  • Personal achievement
  • Volunteerism/community outreach
  • Involvement in academic life
  • Self-management
  • Goal achievement
  • Integrity
  • Social skills

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE

The deadline for nominating institutions is on 2nd November, 2021 by 20:00 Eastern daylight time (EDT).

Students should consult their respective nominating institution for submission deadline.

  • July-November 2021: Candidates seek a nominating institution, get ready and submit application package.
  • 2nd November, 2021 (20:00 EST): Institutions closing date to submit nominations to the Vanier CGS program.
  • November 2021 – March 2022: Evaluation and review of nominations.
  • Beginning of April 2022: Nominees will be contacted via email when the results accessible on ResearchNet.
  • 1st May, 2022, 1st September 2022 or 1st January, 2023: Payment commences.
