It is a common belief that the turn-over in a business on a Monday, either positive or negative, goes a long way to determine the productivity and reward for the entire week.

There’s however a uniqueness in the pattern of traffic in Lagos, most importantly on Mondays. I carried out a study and analysis on the regularities of traffic on Lagos road in the mainland, Lagos majorly on the routes I take to work (Ojodu Berger – Yaba, Lagos); the experiment lasted for 2 months and based on observation and discussion with most other passengers, I found something fascinating.

The analysis showed that Monday is one of the days in which Lagos roads are less congested and busy despite the zeal and readiness to pull off with a productive week.

The traffic within Ikeja, Ketu, Ojota, Maryland, towards the third mainland bridge is usually free as well. Factors responsible for this may include:

• Migration: Up to 50% of jobs in Lagos is located on the Island, hence, more people work in these areas. To avoid been stuck in traffic, most individuals who worked in these areas usually migrate, stay with a friend or sleep in offices or whatever way works, a day before, mostly Sundays to avoid getting late to work on Monday. Some of these individuals only come back to the mainland on Friday evenings to save face and their buttocks from long hours of traffic.

• Retreat from outings on Mondays’: It has also been noticed that some individuals, mostly market women, business owners, and vendors prefer to go out late or skip going out on Mondays to avoid traffic and better strategize on how to navigate through the business for the new week. It is a common practice among self-employers/traders.

• Friday Bargains/Business Engagement: Lagosians are believed to be rich people and consumers of varieties of goods and services. Sellers and business owners are not all residents of Lagos, the majority of them come from outside Lagos to carry out various businesses, get enough money and run out of Lagos to prepare for the coming week. To avoid the hustling and bustling of a new week, business owners better transacts on Fridays and mostly week for transportation of the goods majorly. Hence, traffic is reduced to a minimum level.

• Early Walkers: Lagos had taught people to be wise and smart in their thinking and about the general approach to doing things. One of the best ways to avoid getting late to work on a Monday and avoid scolding from a boss is to leave home as early as 4.00 am- 4.30 am. A lot of people fall into this category, hence the reason for their name.
