The National Open University of Nigeria was initially established in 1977. The then chairman of the National University commission conceived the idea and it was sent to the Federal Military Government as part of the Fourth National Development Plan in 1976.

The Shehu Shagari regime in 1979 went further to enhance the modalities of establishment and give it the name- National Open University of Nigeria.

After the ratification of the bill was submitted by the presidential committee on NOUN.

It had its legal backing in 1983. However, it was suspended by the military government that overthrew shehu shagari’s  government.

The present universities can not cater for all Nigerians. Thus, the 1983 law on National Open University of Nigeria was revisited. The Olusegun Obasanjo regime that started in 1999 took action to activate open universities in 2002 which gave rise to the rebirth of NOUN.

Admission Process

The process of admission is very easy and not talking much.

The process is tagged before payment, After payment and After filling form. The first process known as Before Payment has thirteen steps and these steps are outlined below:

  • You have to visit the site www.nouonline.net
  • On the Homepage, go to the Menu Bar, click on Apply for Admission.
  • Select either Undergraduate Programme or Postgraduate programme.
  • Go to” choose faculty”. This faculty can be found at the left hand side of the screen.
  • You have to select faculty
  • Click below to New Admission criteria.
  • Click on Apply to proceed.
  • Please take note of the Unique ID displayed.
  • Click the continue button
  • Select the Bank Branch as payment type
  • Then click on “pay”
  • Copy and take your RRR number to any Bank Branch for payment.

The After Payment includes five steps. It is outlined below:

  • Perform 1 to 3 in the Before Payment procedure.
  • Go to continue after payment
  • Input Unique ID, RRR number and programme
  • Click on proceed
  • Fill the Form.

PS: It is important to fill all fields marked with red stars. It is compulsory to fill.

Next: It is the After Filling Form step.

It is the last step to be conducted online. It involves three steps and they are as follows:

  • Click submit
  • Print the Admission Letter
  • Then, visit the nearest study centre for screening.
