10 Less Competitive Science Courses in Nigeria (2020)

Less competitive science courses

This post talk about Ten (10) less competitive science courses in Nigeria.

An inferiority complex makes some students not to be proud to mention the polytechnic, colleges of education, or even universities that they are admitted into; or after graduation.

Less competitive science courses

That goes with courses  one study in the tertiary university.

NEW YEAR SALE

These courses often refer to being less competitive in the sense that most students do not always go for them. Fewer students often offer such courses or pick them during filling JAMB application.

However, it is noteworthy to mention that no course in the university, college of education or polytechnic which is not relevant in our world today. Whether it is in demand or not by students.

But what are those less competitive science courses in Nigeria? Let us examine it and extract the gems from it. Maybe it might be in demand and become the most competitive in nature.

10 Less Competitive Science Courses in Nigeria

They are as follows:

  1. Agriculture
  2. Microbiology
  3. Science Laboratory Technology
  4. Animal Science
  5. Chemistry
  6. Veterinary Science
  7. Botany
  8. Soil Science
  9. Textile Science and Technology
  10. Zoology

Agriculture

Agriculture is the study of crops or plants. It has to do with everything with crops, animals and plants. Many science students in secondary school do not buy the idea of going to the university to study Agriculture. That makes it less competitive in nature. Even some students that are studying it, are not proud to say it out.

This Buhari dispensation has brought out the real value of Agriculture. Now Farmers in Nigeria especially those into Rice plantation, since the importation of rice is banned.

Apart from rice plantation, there are other avenues that Nigerian are making money from Agriculture. For example poultry, fishery, etc.

University Deals

Microbiology

It is noteworthy to mention that most of these less competitive science courses have great opportunities, especially opportunities to be self-employed or like I will call it to be the boss or CEO of your own.

Microbiology is not left out,  as a microbiologist you can be the one providing the solution to curing a bacteria, virus, or parasite. Take, for example, the Corona virus that the world is eagerly waiting for the vaccines.

Primary School Deals

Moreover, sicknesses abound in the country or the world. And we need the cure to it. A good understanding of the agents causing it can proffer medicine to the sickness.

Science Laboratory Technology

In Nigeria, we obsess with white-collar jobs or working in offices that we fail to see that lots of opportunities can be extracted from every course in tertiary university.

Science Laboratory Technology is one of such courses that opportunity juice can be extracted.

It involves doing research, investigating and drawing a conclusion.

That is the work of the scientific laboratory technician. They are responsible for making research into hematology and the immune system.

Animal Science

Animal science is part of Agriculture. But few universities have it as a course on its own.

The study of animals and everything related to animals. Animal science is different from zoology.

The economy’s value of an animal can not be over emphasized.

There are lots of opportunities that can arise from studying animal science or should I say lots of business ideas from it.

Chemistry

It is the study of chemical, solving equations. It is a course that few science secondary students opt for. It is a course few students offer at the university. But it opened doors to many employment opportunities.

It is better to highlight the fact that there is no course in the tertiary institution that is too easy or difficult. Or any that there are no great opportunities that come from it.

Veterinary Science

Medical Doctors treat humans, surgeons operate on humans while veterinary Doctors treat animals.

They are animal Doctors. Treatment or diagnosis of animal diseases, acting as a surgeon on animals, etc.

Nigerians keep animals as a pet or for agricultural reasons – food or commercial. Rearing animals is a job, so the services of a veterinary doctor is a necessity.

Veterinary hospitals are not popular in Nigeria. Unlike other businesses and hospitals, it is not established much. Like in my area, there is only one veterinary hospital treating animals.  If you are science secondary students, can you spot a business idea?

Botany

Botany is the study of plants. It is also the study of plant organisms. Farming a part of Agriculture was the main source of revenue for the federal government of Nigeria; before the discovery of oil.

Again, farming is left to the illiterates. People without knowledge of plants. But having a botanist taking charge in farming will create a huge difference.

That is why the western world is making a greater impact on farming. It is not left to the illiterates.

Going to university is not only about getting a white-collar job. It is also about solving problems in your immediate environment and nation as large. That is adding value to society and being self-reliant.

Soil Science

It is the scientific study of the soil. This study includes the formation, properties be it chemical,  physical, biological and so on.

Like the name of the course implies, it looks like an easy course to offer. And that is why it is listed among the less competitive science courses. However, there are lots of Job opportunities.

Textile Science and Technology

There are few textile companies in Nigeria. And students that offer textile science and technology can work in such companies. Again, there are multinational industries in textiles.

Even though it is listed as those courses that prospective science does not readily offer in the university. Its value to the society at large can not be overemphasized.

The face mask production is a good example of such value.

Zoology

The opposite of Botany is Zoology. While Botany is the scientific study of plants, Zoology is the scientific study of animals.

The study of animals and how they interact with their environment.

Zoologists can work in wildlife parks etc.

It has been categorized as one of the less competitive science courses in Nigeria’s university.

Conclusion

As said earlier, there are no easy or difficult courses. All courses in the university can add value to society. Yes, there are courses every prospective science students readily offer or are most in-demand and others are not.

Value can be deduced from those science courses that are less competitive in nature.

The world has gone beyond that now, you can be successful in anything you do as long as you are adding value or solving a particular problem in society.

So my perspective science students look beyond the most or less competitive science courses. Offer a course that will enable you to add value or solve a problem in society.
